MDOT MTA TO FURTHER ADJUST SERVICE AS RIDERSHIP DECLINES AMID COVID-19 EMERGENCY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MARC, Commuter Bus Service Reductions Effective Monday, April 13

BALTIMORE, MD (April 10, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) will implement additional reductions of MARC Train and Commuter Bus service effective Monday, April 13. The changes are in response to ridership declines for MARC Train and Commuter Bus during the COVID-19 emergency as residents heed the call of Governor Larry Hogan to limit travel and transit use to essential trips only. Compared to a year ago, ridership is down 96% on MARC Train and down 94% on Commuter Bus.

“By implementing these strategic service reductions, MDOT MTA is taking proactive steps to align our service with current demand while ensuring that essential riders have the ability to practice social distancing,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn.

MDOT MTA implemented initial service reductions on MARC Train, Commuter Bus and other transit modes on March 18. Beginning Monday, MDOT MTA will further reduce MARC’s current “R” schedule by eliminating select trains on all lines – Penn, Camden and Brunswick. For Commuter Bus, 13 routes will continue to operate on the “S” schedule, but 22 routes will see additional service reductions, and service on route #204 will be eliminated entirely.

For a complete list of modifications on MARC, Commuter Bus and other MDOT MTA modes, as well as details of measures being taken to protect our riders and operators and maximize efficiency, go to mta.maryland.gov/coronavirus.

MDOT MTA encourages riders to review Governor Hogan’s Stay-at-Home order, and limit transit use during the COVID-19 emergency to essential travel only – trips to essential work sites, hospitals, healthcare providers, pharmacies, grocery stores, banks, food distribution centers, the homes of family members who need care, and similar destinations.

MDOT MTA is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States. MDOT MTA operates a Local Bus and Commuter Bus network, as well as Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink, MARC Train service and a comprehensive Mobility paratransit system. MDOT MTA’s goal is to provide safe, efficient and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service.
