MDOT MTA Honored for Excellence in Transit Projects

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Camden Station and Cold Spring Retaining Wall Win Awards of Excellence at MdQI Ceremony

BALTIMORE, MD (February 4, 2020) – With the new MARC Camden Station leading the way, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) took home three Maryland Quality Initiatives (MdQI) Awards of Excellence at a recent ceremony at the Baltimore Convention Center. The MdQI Awards of Excellence recognize quality, collaboration and innovation in public sector transportation projects around the state. MDOT MTA received awards in the categories of Projects Over $5 Million, Projects Under $5 Million and Green/Sustainability/Environmental.

“It is an honor for our Camden Station to be recognized by leaders in the transportation industry as a model for developing quality transit projects,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. “Also, I’m pleased that our efforts to stabilize and mitigate future erosion along the Jones Falls were recognized.”

In the category of Projects Over $5 Million, Camden Station was honored as the highest quality project for design and construction. The $7 million station, which opened in September 2019, serves MARC Train and Light RailLink customers with an expanded seating area, restrooms, new ticket vending machines and bicycle racks. Its design complements the nearby historic and iconic Camden Yards Sports Complex.

Camden Station also received the award in the Green/Sustainability/Environmental category for its energy-efficient lighting, plumbing fixtures and coated glass to reduce energy consumption. MDOT MTA is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, which would designate Camden Station as a “green” facility.

MDOT MTA received first place honors in the Projects Under $5 Million category for a $1.84 million project to build a retaining wall that will stabilize and help mitigate erosion of the Jones Falls riverbank adjacent to the Cold Spring Light RailLink stop. Innovative construction approaches enabled this project to be completed a week ahead of schedule.

The MdQI Conference is an annual gathering to support the efforts of Maryland’s transportation industry and agencies in providing quality planning, design, construction and maintenance. The honors received by MDOT MTA at the January 23 ceremony were among 17 awards overall presented to MDOT business units including the MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA), the MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) and the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA).
