We don’t know exactly what day Governor William Donald Schaefer sat at the controls of a Light Rail vehicle for this photo, but we do know that he took his first trip after boarding a test train at Woodberry Stop on November 20, 1991. This trip was taken 27 years after the Metropolitan Transit Authority conducted a study in 1964 over a combined bus, light rail and subway system vs. an all-bus system. At that time, Schaefer was on the Baltimore City Council. Schaefer became Mayor in 1971 and Governor in 1986. Schaefer stepped down from his position as governor on January 18, 1995 after serving the maximum two four-year terms, but not before he saw the opening of MTA Light Rail on April 2, 1992, coinciding with the opening of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. This year Light Rail is celebrating its 25th Anniversary and continues to be the transit of choice for Bird lovers. This year’s opening home game will be against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 3 at 3:05 p.m. We hope to see you onboard!
